What this tool does
Choose an AVIF and download a PNG. Transparent areas are kept, so it suits logos, cut-outs and UI assets.
How to use it
- Choose a AVIF file, or drop it on the page. A preview and its size appear.
- Press Convert to PNG.
- Compare the input and output sizes the page shows, then press Download PNG.
Where it runs
The work happens in your browser, using the canvas feature that every current browser has. The image is not uploaded and nothing is stored on this site’s server.
Your browser has to be able to open AVIF to read the file. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 and later can. If yours can’t, the tool reports that it couldn’t read the image.
What to expect
- Lossless output. The PNG preserves the pixels your browser decoded. Any softness AVIF compression introduced stays, and no further loss is added.
- A much larger file. AVIF is very efficient and PNG is not. A photograph that is 200 KB as AVIF can be several megabytes as PNG. For photos without transparency, AVIF to JPG is a better choice.
When it helps
You need to open an AVIF in a design tool that doesn’t read it yet, or put it into an application that only accepts PNG or JPG, without losing the transparent background.
Limits
- PNG is always lossless, and the browser’s PNG writer has no quality setting, so the page shows no quality slider.
- Metadata such as EXIF, location and colour profiles is not carried over, because the image is redrawn.
- Browsers apply a photo’s EXIF rotation when they open it, so a phone photo normally comes out the right way up.
- An animated image becomes a single still frame.
- The page states a 20 MB maximum but doesn’t check it in the browser. Very large images depend on your device’s memory, and the browser can fail on huge ones.
Does the PNG keep transparency?
Yes, the alpha channel is preserved.
Why is the PNG file so big?
PNG is lossless and compresses photographic content far less efficiently than AVIF.
Will it improve the image quality?
No. It keeps what the AVIF contains without adding detail.
Is there a quality slider?
No. PNG output has no quality setting in the browser, so the page doesn’t show one.
Is my AVIF uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser.
