What this tool does
This is the flexible version of the single-purpose converters. Choose an image, pick the output format (JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF), set the quality, and optionally change the width and height before you download the result.
How to use it
- Choose a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF image, or drop it on the page. Its size and dimensions are shown.
- Choose the output format and set the quality.
- To resize at the same time, change the width or height. Lock Proportions keeps the ratio.
- Press Convert & Optimize, check the new size, then press Download Converted Image.
Choosing a format
- A photo that must work everywhere: JPG.
- A photo, smaller file, modern browsers: WebP or AVIF.
- A graphic with transparency: PNG or WebP.
- Sharpest possible text and lines: PNG.
How quality works
- Quality (10 to 100) controls the size and detail of JPG, WebP and AVIF output. PNG is lossless and the browser’s PNG writer has no quality setting, so the slider has no effect on PNG output.
- JPG can’t hold transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. There is no background colour option. WebP, AVIF and PNG keep transparency.
Where it runs
JPG, PNG and WebP output is made in your browser and the image is not uploaded. AVIF output is the exception: browsers can’t write AVIF from a canvas, so the file is sent to this site’s server, which encodes it with PHP’s GD library when the build supports AVIF. It is kept temporarily for the download, and the tool reports an error if AVIF isn’t available.
Limits
- Each lossy conversion costs detail. Convert from the original rather than a previously converted copy.
- Metadata and colour profiles are not copied. Browsers apply EXIF rotation when they open a photo.
- Animated images become a single still frame.
- One image per run. The page states a 20 MB maximum but doesn’t check it in the browser. Resizing is capped at 8,192 pixels on a side.
If you already know the exact conversion you want, a dedicated page such as PNG to JPG or JPG to WebP explains the specifics for it.
Which format should I choose for a website?
WebP is a good default. Use JPG for maximum compatibility, PNG for sharp graphics, and AVIF if you can serve a fallback.
Can I choose the background colour?
No. When the output is JPG, transparent areas are filled with white.
Why can’t I get an AVIF?
AVIF is written on this site’s server. If its image library lacks AVIF support, the tool reports that.
Can I resize while converting?
Yes. Change the width or height before converting. Lock Proportions keeps the aspect ratio.
Can I convert several images at once?
No. The tool handles one image at a time.
