WHOIS / RDAP Domain Lookup

Look up a domain's registrar, creation and expiry dates, name servers and status codes through RDAP. Personal contact details are usually redacted.

Queries RDAP (the structured successor to WHOIS) and falls back to a port-43 WHOIS query for registries without RDAP. Most registrars redact registrant personal details, so expect registrar and technical data rather than the identity of an owner.

What this tool does

Enter a domain and the tool shows its registration record: the registrar, the creation, update and expiry dates, the name servers, the status codes (such as clientTransferProhibited) and whether DNSSEC is signed.

RDAP, WHOIS and what is shown

RDAP is the modern, structured replacement for the old WHOIS protocol. This tool asks the public RDAP service at rdap.org, which forwards the question to the registry responsible for the domain. That means the domain you search is sent to that service as part of the lookup. Results are cached for 24 hours.

Since GDPR, most registrars redact personal details of the registrant. Expect “redacted for privacy” in place of a name, address, phone or email. You’ll mostly see organisation-level data and technical fields, not a person’s identity.

Reading the status codes

  • clientTransferProhibited: the registrar has locked the domain against transfer. This is normal and protective.
  • clientDeleteProhibited and clientUpdateProhibited: the same idea for deletion and changes.
  • pendingDelete and redemptionPeriod: the domain has expired and is in the deletion process.
  • ok: no special restrictions.

Practical uses

  • Checking when a domain expires, so you can renew in time
  • Finding the registrar before you transfer a domain
  • Verifying which name servers are set at the registry, which can differ from DNS you see elsewhere
  • Researching a domain before buying it

Limits

Not every country-code TLD supports RDAP. If a registry has no RDAP service, the lookup may fail or return little. The tool can’t tell you who really owns a privacy-protected domain. For just the age of a domain, Domain Age Checker is quicker. Up to 10 lookups a minute are allowed.

Why can’t I see the owner’s name?

Most registrars redact personal registrant data for privacy. The record shows registrar and technical data instead.

Does every domain have RDAP data?

No. Some country-code domains have no RDAP service, so results can be missing.

Does the tool send my search to a third party?

Yes. The lookup goes through the public rdap.org service, which contacts the registry.

What does clientTransferProhibited mean?

The registrar has locked the domain against transfers. It is a normal protective setting.

Why doesn’t a change I made show up yet?

Lookup results are cached for 24 hours, and registries update their records on their own schedule. Check again later.
