What this tool does
Choose a WebP and download a PNG. Transparency is kept, which makes PNG the right target when the WebP is a logo, icon or cut-out.
How to use it
- Choose a WebP file, or drop it on the page. A preview and its size appear.
- Press Convert to PNG.
- Compare the input and output sizes the page shows, then press Download PNG.
Where it runs
The work happens in your browser, using the canvas feature that every current browser has. The image is not uploaded and nothing is stored on this site’s server.
What lossless means here
PNG doesn’t lose quality when saved, so the PNG holds the pixels exactly as your browser decodes the WebP. If the WebP was lossy, the artifacts it already had remain. Converting to PNG doesn’t restore detail. It only stops further loss.
File size
Expect a bigger file, sometimes several times bigger for photographs, since PNG compresses photographic images poorly.
When PNG is the right choice
- You need transparency in an app or editor that doesn’t read WebP.
- You will edit the image again and want no more loss.
- The image is a flat graphic or screenshot with sharp edges.
For photos without transparency, WebP to JPG gives a much smaller file.
Limits
- PNG is always lossless, and the browser’s PNG writer has no quality setting, so the page shows no quality slider.
- Metadata such as EXIF, location and colour profiles is not carried over, because the image is redrawn.
- Browsers apply a photo’s EXIF rotation when they open it, so a phone photo normally comes out the right way up.
- An animated image becomes a single still frame.
- The page states a 20 MB maximum but doesn’t check it in the browser. Very large images depend on your device’s memory, and the browser can fail on huge ones.
Does the PNG keep transparency?
Yes.
Is there a quality setting?
No. PNG is lossless and the browser’s PNG writer has no quality option, so the page shows no slider.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG is lossless and compresses photographs poorly. Use JPG for photos without transparency.
Will converting to PNG improve a blurry WebP?
No. It preserves what’s there but can’t add detail.
Is my WebP uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser.
